Hubble space telescope expansion parallaxes of the planetary nebulae

چکیده

We have combined two epochs of Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging data with ground-based expansion velocities to determine distances to three planetary nebulae (NGC 6578, NGC 6884, and IC 2448). We used two variants of the expansion parallax technique—a gradient method and a magnification method— to determine the distances. The results from the two methods agree to within the errors. A fourth nebula was included in the study (NGC 6891), but the expansion was too small to determine the distance, and only a lower limit was obtained. This is the first paper in a series which will examine at least 24 nebulae in total. Subject headings: planetary nebulae, evolution

Astrometry with the Hubble Space Telescope: A Parallax of the Fundamental Distance Calibrator RR

We present absolute parallaxes and relative proper motions for the central stars of the planetary nebulae NGC6853 (The Dumbbell), NGC 7293 (The Helix), Abell 31, and DeHt 5. This paper details our reduction and analysis using DeHt 5 as an example. We obtain these planetary nebula nuclei (PNNi) parallaxes with astrometric data from Fine Guidance Sensors FGS 1R and FGS 3, white-light interferomet...

On expansion parallax distances for planetary nebulae

The distances to individual wind-driven bubbles such as Planetary Nebulae (PNe) can be determined using expansion parallaxes: the angular expansion velocity in the sky is compared to the radial velocity of gas measured spectroscopically. Since the one is a pattern velocity, and the other a matter velocity, these are not necessarily the same. Using the jump conditions for both shocks and ionizat...

Infrared Imaging of Planetary Nebulae from the Ground Up

New ground-based telescopes and instruments, the return of the NICMOS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and the recent launch of the Spitzer Space Telescope have provided new tools that are being utilized in the study of planetary nebulae. Multiwavelength, high spatial resolution ground-based and HST imaging have been used to probe the inner regions of young PNe to determine their...

Preplanetary Nebulae: an Hst Imaging Survey and a New Morphological Classification System

Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have carried out a survey of candidate preplanetary nebulae (PPNs). We report here our discoveries of objects having well-resolved geometrical structures, and use the large sample of PPNs now imaged with HST (including previously studied objects in this class) to devise a comprehensive morphological classification system for this category of objects. T...

Three-dimensionalmorphologies of Planetary Nebulae

The largest hurdle to understanding the physics of planetary nebulae is knowledge of their distances. Though measuring distances is normally a diÆcult problem in astronomy, measuring the distances to planetary nebulae is especially tough. The most commonly used techniques use sweeping assumptions about the population of planetary nebulae, yielding typical distance errors to these objects are us...
